Later that night, as Nicky lay side by side with Michael in bed, he was aware that they were both staring up at the ceiling, both wide awake.

“This is weird,” Michael said, eventually. “Everything feels different. We feel different. What are we going to do now?”

“What do you want to do?” Nicky asked, and even he could hear the hesitancy in his voice.

“Well, we could have sex? It’s been a long time for both of us.”

“And that’s it?” Nicky shook his head. “That’s your reason for us having sex? That’s all you’ve got?”

“It’s a pretty good reason. Plus”—Michael started counting things off on his fingers—“you’re also damned beautiful, a truly decent person and…”

“Shut up.” Nicky wasn’t joking. “That’s not good enough.”

“Why not?”

Nicky sighed, the sound just a little desperate. “Like I said, I’m not great at casual, but I can do it if I don’t have to see the person again. I can even do repeat performances if that’s all there is, just sex. What I can’t do is casual with a friend. I can’t handle that.”

“But we’re more than friends. We’re—”

“Michael,” Nicky interrupted. “Don’t say stuff you don’t mean.”

“I’m very fond of you. I could—”

“I’m not surprised,” Nicky interrupted again. “Of course you’re ‘fond’ of me, I’m the one that protects your arse, you’re bound to be fond of me. But it doesn’t mean anything.” He looked over briefly, his gaze never quite meeting Michael’s. “But you’re not in love with me, and it would screw things up too much if we started fucking. Now we work because we’re friends. Don’t mess with something that works.” With that he turned on his side, his back to Michael.

“But I am very fond of you,” Michael said softly, into the darkness.

“Then be nice to me. I have to talk to the girls tomorrow, tell them what’s going on. Cut me some slack and leave things alone.”

There was a long moment of silence, then Michael reached over and squeezed Nicky’s shoulder before turning on his side and going to sleep.

Nicky had told Adeline that sex was about two people caring and sharing, and he meant it.
